30-Day Journaling Challenge: Reflections

The journey of self-improvement often leads us to discover new ways and practices that can profoundly impact our lives. So, on April 10th, I decided to take on a 30-day journaling challenge, after watching numerous personal development videos that emphasized the benefits of journaling. As a freelancer, I was curious to see how this practice could help me navigate the ups and downs of my career and personal life. Here are my reflections.

The Motivation Behind the Challenge

Journaling wasn’t entirely new to me, but I had never been consistent with it. Many of the videos I watched on personal development talked about the benefits of journaling for mental clarity, reducing anxiety, developing positive habits, and providing a space for daily reflection. I was particularly interested in how journaling could help me manage the rollercoaster of emotions that come with freelancing. Watching a YouTuber named struthless talk about his journaling system, which he claimed changed his life, was that final push I needed. I used some aspects of his approach to journaling to start my practice.

Goal Setting

On the first day of the journaling challenge, I started by listing things I was grateful for, which set a positive tone. Gratitude is a powerful practice that can shift your mindset from scarcity to abundance. After listing five to six things I was thankful for, I moved on to goal setting.

I broke down my goals into short-term (12 months) and long-term (5 years). This included professional aspirations like increasing website traffic, gaining a steady flow of clients, growing my social media presence, and launching my YouTube channel. I also set personal goals such as achieving a desired physical physique through regular exercise. Visualizing where I wanted to be if I continued on my positive path helped me stay focused and motivated.

Daily Reflections

One of the most beneficial aspects of the 30-day journaling challenge was the daily reflections. Each day, I documented my activities, what I ate, if I exercised or not, and how productive I felt. This practice helped me recognize patterns in my behavior and productivity. On more productive days, I felt happier and more accomplished. On less productive days, I had feelings of irritability and self-doubt. Being aware of this helped me adjust my habits and routines to maximize productivity and maintain a positive mindset.

Reflecting on my emotions was equally important. Freelancing can be a lonely journey, and it’s easy to get caught up in negative self-talk. Journaling allowed me to confront these emotions head-on. Writing about my feelings provided an outlet to process them and gain clarity. It also helped me celebrate small wins and progress, which is essential for maintaining motivation.

Impostor Syndrome

Another powerful aspect of this challenge was addressing my fears and feelings of impostor syndrome. I would write down my negative thoughts, then I’d write something motivational, like I was giving myself a pep talk. In doing this, I was able to encourage myself to push through these barriers. This practice was particularly helpful in overcoming the anxiety associated with growing my social media presence and putting myself out there on YouTube. Journaling became a safe space where I could be honest with myself and find the strength to keep moving forward.

Impostor syndrome is something many of us face, especially when stepping into new roles or taking on new challenges. Writing about these feelings made them more manageable. I could see them on paper, dissect them, and then counter them with positive affirmations and reminders of my accomplishments.

Weekly to-do list with 4 items on the list: reply to clients, finish my editing project, exercise, and journal

Weekly To-Do Lists

To stay organized and productive, I made it a habit to create weekly to-do lists on Sunday evenings. These lists included editing projects, coaching calls, professional development webinars, client responses, and exercise plans. Having a clear plan for the week helped me stay focused and accomplish more. This simple practice significantly boosted my productivity and ensured that I was making consistent progress toward my goals.

Creating a to-do list might seem basic, but it’s incredibly effective, especially for freelancers because we are our own boss. It provides a roadmap for the week and ensures that important tasks don’t fall through the cracks. Reviewing and updating my list regularly allows me adjust my priorities as needed and stay on track.

Therapeutic Benefits

Journaling provided a therapeutic outlet for my thoughts and emotions. It gave me a chance to gather my thoughts and put them all in one place (which was a used notebook because I didn’t have any blank ones at the time; I talk about that in the video I made). This process was incredibly beneficial for my mental health and overall well-being. Despite missing two days due to watching boxing matches (Ryan Garcia vs Devin Haney and Canelo Álvarez vs Jaime Munguia), the overall experience was overwhelmingly positive. I realized that journaling doesn’t have to be perfect; it’s more about the journey and the insights gained during the process.

The therapeutic benefits of journaling extend beyond the surface level. The practice encourages introspection and self-discovery. I track my growth, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate any big or small wins.

Reflecting on the Challenge

After reflecting on my 30-day journaling challenge, I can confidently say that it has become an indispensable part of my routine. It has helped me be more productive, consistent with my exercise, and more aware of my behaviors and emotions. The therapeutic benefits alone make it worth continuing, and I plan to make journaling a lifelong practice. Even if I miss a day or two, I know I can always pick it back up and continue reaping its benefits.

The key takeaway from this challenge is the importance of consistency and self-compassion. Journaling doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s about making it a regular practice and allowing yourself the grace to miss a day without giving up entirely. The insights and growth gained from journaling are cumulative and profound.

Encouraging Others to Start Journaling

I encourage everyone to consider starting their own journaling journey. Whether you’re a freelancer, a professional, or someone looking to gain more clarity and direction in life, journaling can be a powerful tool. It’s a versatile practice that can be tailored to fit your needs and goals. Whether you use it for goal setting, emotional processing, or daily reflections, the benefits are immense.
